In January 2013, Digitalmindsoft released a video of the game physics, which Rock, Paper, Shotgun ( RPS) said " a game that looks a lot like Men Of War with better voice acting". In the multiplayer mode, Digitalmindsoft wanted to integrate the personnel units first and then later the vehicles. Players who purchased the deluxe edition could beta test the unfinished campaigns. In early 2015, PC Gamer reported that the publisher would be the developer, Digitalmindsoft. Lace Mamba Global was announced as the publisher in December 2012. Kramer also said that Digitalmindsoft was designing a new cooperative system relative to Assault Squad. When asked about the quality of Men of War series co-developer 1C Company's games Men of War: Vietnam and Men of War: Condemned Heroes, Kramer said it was more important to self-improve than to critique 1C's games. He later made the point that the two games would play differently because they were set in two different periods of time, owing to the change in warfare. Chris Kramer, managing director of Digitalmindsoft, noted that there was a balance between making the game realistic and between making the game well-balanced and easy to play, as well as a balance between freedom-of-choice and game balance. Īlthough Digitalmindsoft had improved on the series's gameplay mechanics in Assault Squad, the company wanted to continue to focus on ease-of-gameplay improvements in Call to Arms. Digitalmindsoft said there would be a focus on the infantry-level interaction rather than an interaction with heavy weaponry such as tanks and airplanes, but that heavy weaponry would be playable. For the single-player mode, Digitalmindsoft wanted to implement what the players wanted, though they were aware that they were limited by their crowdfunding campaign. Digitalmindsoft also planned to allow the player to control a unit's specific actions in a third-person view, similar to Men of War: Assault Squad, as well as allow players to build their own mods for the game. The factions are based on modern factions. Digitalmindsoft planned their factions to be asymmetric, fun-to-play, and fair. The developer planned for two playable factions and an assortment of other features for when the game was released, and planned to extend the game through additional units, factions, and maps thereafter. The developer saw an opportunity to develop a real-time strategy video game set in the modern day, especially with the gameplay common to the Men of War series. Video game developer Digitalmindsoft announced Call to Arms on their website in December 2012, calling it the "true successor" to the Men of War series. The game provides 12 vehicles and 60 pieces of equipment. The game provides bots possessing artificial intelligence in multiplayer mode. The first team to take the greater number of points wins the round. The Domination game mode requires each team to take strategic points on a map, with the number of points decided by the number of players. Gameplay Ĭall to Arms is a real-time tactics and strategy video game. An expansion pack, titled Gates of Hell: Ostfront, was released in 2021. The early access version of the game was released on 30 July 2015 to Steam. Call to Arms is a real-time tactics and strategy video game developed by German company Digitalmindsoft as the spiritual successor to the Men of War series. ScratchLittleCrab01.pdf - this is a Scratch version of the scenario used in the Greenfoot workshop, resources are available at /workshop and that's an excellent follow-on if you get into wanting to do the projects using Java and Greenfoot rather than Scratch. The lesson plan for that meeting is attached below, " Computer Club Lesson 3 - Scratch Game Development.pdf" and the 2 different games we've been using are attached below: Scratch Game Development - the third one is more of a do-what-I-do instruction session where we build one of two games, depending on the grade level. If the students have successfully made a scratch project that incorporates at least some movement blocks, some sound blocks, some control blocks and likely responding to keyboard events, they've at least got a handle on using Scratch for now.ģ. The point is exploration and less do-exactly-what-I-do instruction. The lesson plan for that meeting is attached below, " Computer Club Lesson 2 - What is Scratch.pdf" and the resources can be anything including the videos on or the Scratch card document or the Scratch Reference Guide document. But even if all you have is Scratch installed, there are plenty of sounds and sprite images to work with. Even better if the students can record themselves for the sounds and take pictures of themselves or others for costumes using a webcam. The project itself is less critical, we simply want the students to gain familiarity with dragging and connecting scratch blocks, and have some fun along the way so we include sounds, movement, and different costumes. If you don't have that kind of resource available, you can probably use a site like to discuss pieces and parts and relate that back to what the students are using for Scratch.Ģ. Scratch Introduction - the second one introduces using Scratch for students who haven't used it before. The lesson plan for that meeting is attached below, " Computer Club Lesson 1 - The Machine-1.pdf" We were fortunate enough to have real (but older.) computers for the students to tear into and identify parts and map that back to what's going on for input and output, what the parts are used for and so on. The Computer - the first one introduces computing in general, and we talk about machine input and output, similar to what was posted on /stories/using-picoboards-and-scratch-students-alternate-input-devices. The Velvet Underground Follow Artist + The quintessential bohemian New York band of the 60s that fused art, rock, and poetry in a fashion that proved incalculably influential. ∙ The Velvet Underground was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, and Rolling Stone included the group in its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. ∙ After pushing the limits of their sound with 1968’s distortion-filled White Light/White Heat, they returned to more pop-oriented territory on their 1969 self-titled album and 1970’s Loaded. ∙ Reflecting on the group’s first LP-which initially sold only 30,000 copies-experimental icon Brian Eno said, “I think everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band!” While the band was taking shape, nearby Andy Warhol was expanding his. Library of Congress as “one of the most enduring albums in the history of rock ’n’ roll.” They called themselves the Velvet Underground, their name inspired by a 1963 paperback depicting sexual subcultures. ∙ The band’s full-length debut, 1967’s The Velvet Underground & Nico, was recognized by the U.S. ∙ Artist Andy Warhol, who became their manager, insisted that they add German singer/model Nico to the group, and he included them in his traveling multimedia show, Exploding Plastic Inevitable. ∙ Formed in 1964, the band grew out of the friendship between Lou Reed and John Cale-the latter of whom had worked with pioneering experimental composers John Cage and La Monte Young. Few rock albums are as important as The Velvet Underground & Nico, and fewer still have lost so little of their power to surprise and intrigue more 50 years after first hitting the racks. One of rock’s most influential bands, The Velvet Underground embraced the avant-garde spirit of 1960s New York City, while laying the groundwork for decades of alternative and experimental music. March 2, 1942, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.d. The principal members were Lou Reed (original name Lewis Allan Reed b. While the significance of Nico's contributions have been debated over the years, she meshes with the band's outlook in that she hardly sounds like a typical rock vocalist, and if Andy Warhol's presence as producer was primarily a matter of signing the checks, his notoriety allowed The Velvet Underground to record their material without compromise, which would have been impossible under most other circumstances. the Velvet Underground, American band of the 1960s whose primal guitar sound and urban noir lyrics, influenced by avant-garde art and modern literature, inspired the punk and alternative rock movements of the 1970s and ’80s. The bracing discord of "European Son," the troubling beauty of "All Tomorrow's Parties," and the expressive dynamics of "Heroin" all remain as compelling as the day they were recorded. Lou Reed's lyrical exploration of drugs and kinky sex (then risky stuff in film and literature, let alone "teen music") always received the most press attention, but the music Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Maureen Tucker played was as radical as the words they accompanied. Here, the Velvets dipped their toes into dreamy pop ("Sunday Morning"), tough garage rock ("Waiting for the Man"), stripped-down R&B ("There She Goes Again"), and understated love songs ("I'll Be Your Mirror") when they weren't busy creating sounds without pop precedent. While The Velvet Underground had as distinctive a sound as any band, what's most surprising about this album is its diversity. While it reportedly took over a decade for the album's sales to crack six figures, glam, punk, new wave, goth, noise, and nearly every other left-of-center rock movement owes an audible debt to this set. One would be hard-pressed to name a rock album whose influence has been as broad and pervasive as The Velvet Underground & Nico. In his first documentary, filmmaker Todd Haynes uses the language of experimental cinema to spotlight the Velvet Underground, a legendary band that flowered within New Yorks avant-garde art world. John of Gaunt’s Lancaster Affinity is the most widely signposted example of an affinity. He also created the “super-noble” in the form of his royal sons who he made dukes. Titled noblemen or important members of the gentry (we’ve moved away from barons) developed networks or affinities as a consequence of the greater freedoms that Edward III had been forced to grant them. This ultimately weakened the crown – again this is putting things at their most straight forward. Therefore he gave his nobility more concessions than earlier medieval monarchs had done. He did not require another Mortimer situation on his hands. Rather than being tied to the manor where they were born or having no choice in how much they were offered for their services, land owners now found that the people who worked their land were valuable commodities that had to be paid for.Įdward III needed the support of his nobility. Put very simply, the black death meant that there were insufficient villeins/serfs to work the land. Edward III had the twin problems of the black death and a weakened kingdom thanks to his mother and her lover deposing his father. This system was different from feudalism in that it was based on a contract that involved much more than land in exchange for service and loyalty. The knights might in their turn give land to freemen to hold in return for goods and service.Īll of the above would be served by peasants who might hold their land in return for labour and a percentage of their crops or by serfs who were tied to the land.Ĭlearly it was more complicated than this but this is the basic pyramid that we learn at school.įeudal pyramid showing numbers of people in the system and who gained what.īastard feudalism was not what a serf might describe the social structure as being (sorry – couldn’t resist.) Bastard feudalism developed during the fourteenth century and was at its most influential during the fifteenth century. Just as the baron expected protection so the baron’s tenant would expect the lord to protect him militarily and legally as the lord was himself protected by the king. These vassal of the king would sub-let land, manors and estates to their own adherents, the knightly class or less important barons, in return for loyalty, military service and goods. The lords or barons as medieval history tends to term them, who received land from the monarch often had more than they could manage themselves and in different parts of the country. One of the advantages for William was that he was able to call on a large army when he needed one but it was not a standing army which he would be required to pay for – it also ensured that he was able to reward is supporters. Sometimes a lord might pay for mercenaries to take his place rather than offering military service himself – this was called scutage. In return the monarch’s tenants, or vassals, promised obedience through an act of homage and payment in the form of military service and/or goods. There was a promise of military and legal protection along with the land. The monarch then distributed land or fiefs to his lords – the lands varied in size and location. William the Conqueror regarded the whole of conquered England as his along with the deer, the boar and the wolves who were owned by no one except God and since God had clearly given William England by right of Conquest then the large beasts which roamed the land must also be his…. Essentially the tenant-in-chief was the monarch. Feudalism was the method by which society was structured across the tenth to thirteenth centuries. The player graphics are unrealistic and hard to see. The graphics look old, as you can see from the screen shot. Online play wasn’t too bad, but Nexuiz only has one game type it’s deathmatch against network players or bots, or nothing. The usual WASD-key/space/mouse controls are the standard configuration, but something about the game’s responsiveness and the physics of the character’s movements didn’t feel right to me. The controls were too sluggish for me, and no amount of adjustment could make them sensitive enough for my taste. Even if the game should be under the GPL, it will still rely on proprietary software to operate as intended.Īs a hard-charging UT2004 player, I found Nexuiz’s gameplay to be terribly disappointing. The irony of a free software 3D game is that you’re practically guaranteed to need a proprietary video driver in order to get the most enjoyment out of it. I don’t think we’ll ever see a free software game that truly competes with a proprietary game, but nearly all of them are still worth playing. Nexuiz and PlaneShift are the first free software games to exhibit any sort of competition for their proprietary counterparts. These games are hardly competition for blockbusters like Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, or Final Fantasy 7. Until the release of Nexuiz, such games were limited to text-based programs like Adventure and NetHack, or arcade games like Tux Racer and Frozen Bubble. Still, it’s a recognized focus of the Free Software Foundation to encourage programmers to produce free software games. And since games were affordable, it wasn’t unreasonable to expect your friends to buy their own copies. We didn’t mind sharing them, but it was impossible to copy a game and give it out to friends. We grew up with Atari, Nintendo, and Sega, and games came on cartridges. That games must be proprietary is a notion that most modern gamers are used to. As of Nexuiz version 1.1, you can also run around and shoot computer-controlled players, or “bots.” The bots are not terribly intelligent, so practicing offline won’t necessarily give you better online skills. In a first-person shooter, you run around and shoot other players, usually with the objective of getting the most kills in a certain amount of time. Playing Nexuiz will give you a Quake 3-like experience in terms of gameplay, graphics, and sound. The sound and animation are decent, though not up to modern standards. The program itself is stable, and it worked on most of the distributions I tested it on. It’s put together by volunteer programmers and artists, and for the most part they did a great job on it. Nexuiz is free software, so anyone can download, modify, and share it as they see fit. It has nothing on Unreal Tournament, but it holds its own against other games and on older hardware that can’t be upgraded enough for newer games. It’s a free software multiplayer deathmatch game available for 32- and 64-bit GNU/Linux, and 32-bit Windows. We have good first-person shooter (FPS) games for GNU/Linux, but they’re all proprietary and restrictively licensed. Then GNU/Linux saw a port for Quake 3 Arena, then Unreal Tournament 2003, UT2004, and Doom 3. It started with the opening of the Quake 2 source code. This may help her continue to shield her constituents and causes from the cold, hard politics of austerity gripping Washington. Now, as the new head of the Senate committee that helps make government spending decisions, Mikulski will be one of the most powerful players in Congress at time when an axe hangs over the national budget. She has, for example, marshaled funds to clean up polluted waterways and improve schools in poor neighborhoods nationwide. Her long record of securing “earmarks” - the practice of budgeting money for specific projects that has fallen into disfavor in Washington - also reveals a set of priorities that has made her one of America’s most liberal lawmakers. Known for years as a champion of so-called pork-barrel politics, Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski has steered government money to many pet projects, from astronomy research to new buildings on military bases, protecting federal agency operations in her home state. Envy, "The Covetous Queen" (formerly "Resentment Made Flesh").Whether or not the Sins' essence managed to survive the explosion remains unknown. Once Envy was defeated, she, like her fellow sins, found herself turned into a makeshift hand grenade when Fury exploded the Talisman in the Council's face. Unfortunately for Envy, she still had a thoroughly enraged Fury to contend with, who chased her all the way to the Council Chambers. Now vastly stronger than even her unwitting bodyguard, Envy traveled to the Council's Chambers where she attacked and gloated to the Charred Council, openly voicing her intention to let Heaven and Hell slaughter each other, then assassinate the remaining leaders once they're weak enough, which would allow her to seize Creation for herself. The most crafty of all, however, was Envy, who not only succeeded in turning Fury into her ally via pretending to be a Watcher, but also defeated the Horsman and stole her power along with those belonging to Envy's six siblings via the Talisman of Sin. Therefore, when her turn came to offer the now vastly stronger Fury a place at her side, she instead found herself to have become simply another stepping stone. Pride, on the other hand, set her fellow sins up by making them into stepping stones for Fury's growth. Lust staked their claim among the ruins of a cargo ship where they hunted angels and demons alike raising them into a army of the undead, and when Fury did arrive, Lust attempted to take advantage of her ambitions for power and recognition in order to have her join them, though their illusion simply ends up provoking her instead. Most of the sins either didn't realize what the Council was planning, or didn't care, but three among them sought to take advantage and turn their assassin into an ally through their own gambits. When the early Apocalypse was triggered, the Council made plans to have each of the Horsemen eliminated as part of their plot, they released the Seven Sins onto the war-torn Earth, most of them with new powers and each one remaking a chunk of The Destroyed City into their new homes with the intent of having them take out one of their enforcers Fury, whom they sent after the 'escaped' sins. Despite this relationship to the one they claim to serve, The Charred Council saw fit to have their enforcers the Horsemen imprison them. With their own place in the grand design of Creation the sins are, by definition, divine beings. According to the "Riddle of Sorrows", for reasons yet unknown, The Creator made his universe full of suffering, misery and sin itself. The Seven Deadly Sins are a subject of controversy within Creation. TV Cast - Chromecast/Roku/DLNA is not an official TV brand product and is not affiliated with any of the above brands.
